History of Jawai Bandh

Jawai bandh is a dam built across the Jawai River, which is the tributary of Luni River. Jawai bandh is situated near Sumerpur town in the Pali district of Rajasthan state of India. The dam was built by the Maharaj Umaid Singh of Jodhpur. The main moto of building this dam over Jawai River was to save the Pali district from heavy damage cause by flooding water.  And the dam was constructed for water irrigation and hydel power generation.

The history of Jawai bandh:

1903: the idea of building a dam over River jawai was conceived.
1946: the shape was given to the dam.
12 May, 1946: the work was started for building the dam.
1951: the work was kept on hold due to the financial issues.
1957: project of Jawai bandh was completed.

Jawai bandh is the main water supply source for Pali district. As the main aim of making dam was irrigation and if there is sufficient water in the dam, then villages of Jalore and Pali district get water for irrigation from the Jawai dam.
Jawai bandh is the biggest man made dam in western Rajasthan.

Capacity of dam: 7887.5 million cubic feet
Area of dam: 102,315 acres
Height of dam: 61.25 feet

Jawai bandh’s rich history: 

A saga called Maharshi Javali found a shelter in this region for doing meditation in the Vedic age.
According to Mahabharat, Pandavas are believed to make this place as their temporary home for a while during the exile period.
King Kanishka had conquered the Jaitaran and Rohat area which are part of Pali in 120 AD.
By the end of 7th century AD, king Harshvardhan, from chalukya dynasty started ruling over Jaitaran and Rohat.
After the arrival of Mugals, the Rajput kings tried to beat back them, but they had faced problem.
Pali and all the surrounding area fell under the rule of Rathores of Marwar at the end of 16th and 17th centuries.
At 1857, thakurs of Pali had fight against the British.
There is also a history of tribals living in this area, who are known as ‘Rabari’.
